Short talks wanted for June Hobart meeting

The June meeting is still a while off yet, but we thought we would try something a little bit different and have a bunch of short talks instead of the usual one or two longer talks.

Some suggestions for things people might want to talk about:

  • some project they are currently working on
  • a useful tool/application/distro they think others should know about
  • some useful tips/tricks
  • a general rant about some topic

Pretty much any topic semi-related to open source software, hardware, or culture would be welcome. If you have a topic you are a bit unsure about, feel free to run the idea by John… he’ll most likely say yes.

If you want to give a short talk, then please drop John a line letting him know the topic and how long you think your talk will be. Ideally we would like to keep talks between 2-10 minutes, but if you need more time let John know and we’ll see what we can schedule in.

We look forward to seeing what people come up with.

Hobart TasLUG Meeting: Thursday 11 April

April is upon us and with it brings an earlier than usual TasLUG meeting, the second of the year to feature talks:

Ben Short

Grafana is a data visualisation and analytics platform and the project has recently started developing a logging platform called Loki. Ben will take you through setting up some basic network & syslog monitoring using Grafana, Loki, and Docker containers.

The venue for this month will be Enterprize Hobart:

When:
Thursday 11 April 2019 - 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start
Where:
Enterprize - Hobart
5th floor, Hobart City Council Building
24 Davey Street (map)

Note: the doors inside the foyer will be locked, so you will need to use the intercom to let us know to buzz you in. However, if you arrive after 6:30pm, then we’ll leave a note with a phone number to call as the intercom isn’t near where the talks will be.

Enterprize provide a selection of alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks and coffee pods for the appropriate donation, as well as free instant coffee and tea. So come at 6:00pm, get a drink, and have a bit of a mingle before the talks start at 6:30pm. We will also be heading out to find somewhere to eat afterwards for those interested.

I would like to to extend a big thank you to Enterprize for generously allowing us to use their space to hold regular meetings.

Hobart TasPubLUG: Thursday 21 March - Hope and Anchor Tavern

This month sees the return of TasPubLUG in Hobart and a chance to talk about all things related to free and open source software, hardware, and culture.

When:
6:30pm, Thursday 21 March 2019
Where:
Hope and Anchor Tavern (65 Macquarie St, Hobart)

Let John know if you are planning to come along. If we hear from more than a handful of people that they are coming then we’ll book a table, otherwise we will just rock up see what is available.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week on Thursday.

Hobart TasLUG meeting day survey

There was recently a query about the possibility of changing the day of the month that the Hobart TasLUG meetings are held. Given this it seemed like it would be a good opportunity to do a general survey of when people are available to attend meetings.

With this in mind a survey has been set up for people to fill out. For each day of the month you can select whether you can make it to meetings (green tick), can’t make it on that day (red cross), or would be a maybe (amber tick in parens).

It would be great if everyone interested in attending Hobart meetings could enter their preferences, especially if the current meetings day makes it difficult to attend.

Please note that this survey is for informational purposes only and will only be one factor taken into consideration when determining the best meeting day going forward.

Hobart TasLUG Meeting: Thursday 21 February

The holiday season is well a truly behind us and it is now time for the first Hobart TasLUG meeting of the year. This month’s meeting will feature two talks:

Ian Stevenson

Simple backups for home servers and workstations.

Hobart end of year TasLUG dinner: Thursday 29 November

The end of the year is fast approaching and before everyone starts winding down for the holiday season there is one last opportunity for the Hobart TasLUG community to catch up for an end of year dinner.

When:
6:30pm, Thursday 29 November
Where:
Amigo Mexican Restaurant
http://amigostas.com.au/menu/

If you plan on coming along, then please RSVP to John by Tuesday 27 November so he can make the appropriate booking.

If Amigos are unable to fit us in, the backup option will be Mother India just down the road.

No Hobart TasLUG this month & end of year dinner

There will be no Hobart TasLUG meeting this coming Thursday. The two speakers we had lined up for this months meeting will both be out of the state this Thursday and we haven’t had any time to organise anyone to replace them.

However it is getting close to the end of the year and there has been some talk about having some sort of end of year dinner. Our current thinking is that we have this on Thursday 29 November so as to avoid the silly season that is December.

A couple of suggestions for places to go for the dinner have been the Tacos or Amigo’s Mexican restaurants, but please get in touch with John if you have any other suggestions or preferences. Firmer details will be posted closer to the date.

Hobart TasPubLUG: Thursday 18 October

This month is TasPubLUG time again. We will be heading to the pub to talk about Free and Open Source software, hardware, and culture… or just to generally hang out and having something to eat and drink. This time I’ve randomly pick the Brunswick Hotel as the venue:

When:
6:30pm, Thursday 18 October
Where:
Brunswick Hotel (67 Liverpool Street, Hobart)
http://brunswickhotelhobart.com.au/

If you are planning to come along (even for just a quick drink) please let John know by Tuesday so the appropriate booking can be made if needed.

Hobart TasLUG Meeting: Thursday 20 September

It is an odd month so that must mean it is a talk month at Hobart TasLUG. At the meeting this month we will be having another two talks:

Julius Roberts

Using GitLabCI to build better software.

Peter Billam

Talking about some random-distribution generators in Lua and PostScript, some Markov Chains, some first steps in torch - and then an unorthodox Guitar-Tablature.

The venue for this month will be Enterprize Hobart:

When:
Thursday 20 September 2018 - 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start
Where:
