Software Freedom Day 2010 Discussion
G'day all

I'm hoping that we can start to pool together ideas and plans for SFD this year.

If anybody's got any ideas of things they'd like to show off, or just want to help out by being there, share your thoughts.

So far, we've got the following things in motion:

* I've done up some posters and DL sized flyers ready for printing.
* I'm planning to work with Mike on revisiting his Neverball balance board project.
* Waide is hoping to revisit his visual motion capture system.
* Henry (forum user Attitude) is working on some press releases.
* Frank (forum user packrat) has secured the Gateway Baptist Church Hall for us, and has set up the wiki page on softwarefreedomday.org
* Henry is planning to demo a range of live distributions.
* Henry and Marion have been communicating with someone who may be willing to demonstrate some open source star charting software.

Some ideas that we've thrown around:

* Recreating the gaming setup from last year (several mid-range machines running a live gaming distro that people can walk up to and have a play on)
* Live Inkscape/GIMP running with a graphics tablet connected for public use
* Demonstration of DXF2Papercraft (http://dxf2papercraft.sourceforge.net/)
* Install fest

This is our chance to show to the rest of the community what sort of things we do with open source software and help raise awareness of the stuff we're passionate about.

If we go with the demo of DXF2PaperCraft, then I think it would be worthwhile having a printer, paper, scissors and glue to finish things off. Has anyone actually constructed a model? I know that I have looked at the software, but that is all. I have not printed, cut and glued the resulting model, so it would be worth a try before appearing on the day with it.

Sounds good.

If I can get my hands on a reasonable sized IDE drive, I would love to bring in my G4 eMac running Linux. It really stands out!

I have cleared an entire 430GB partition on my Core2Duo games box, and I have Linux Mint 7.0 ready to install. It would make a super 1080P widescreen games demo (even multi-screen?)

Give me an email Cheese and we can discuss it!

Looks excellent. One thing I'd like to show off (but how?) is the range of desktop environments we can swap and choose between: Gnome, KDE, Xfce, LXDE, etc. For many computer users, the DE is tied to the OS and they can't imagine them separated. How about a screen array with the same distro (ahem... Mint?) and all its DE variants?

Debian produces a number of different CD spins. You can get a Gnome, KDE, LXDE and XFCE. I think that I will have enough machines on the day, so that I can show off each of those different managers. I will have a look and see if there are other spins as well.

I will bring with me the ISO's for those and lots of other distros as well.

Hi,
Just one little thing - WHEN IS IT?
If the date is free for me, I could come to be a 'Tea boy' and any thing else that might help. I also have three PCs, one with Ubuntu/windows on it and one with UE 6 on it and the third is just a shell and needs a decent hard drive, which I hope to get sometime soon, so would possibly be available to set ANYTHING up on it!
Just needs to be on a 'free day' for me!
Peter.
